Hi everyone! I’d like to teach #7 Second Conditional for things that are very improbable.
-
Hi everyone! I did the “Teach me anything” task earlier with my daughter as I needed to move forward on the course.
I decided to teach her “how to make salad dressing”. She’s 12 years old and it was part of our lunch π
I asked her get the utensils we would need. Telling her one at a time. I had her set them up near all of the ingredients. I told her how much oil and how much vinegar. She measured them into the bowl. She added salt and pepper and the base was done. I then let her smell and choose from all of our spices. I only suggested the quantity. We both tasted it. I suggested some more salt. More tasting, and then she wanted to put some more curry powder.
Finished!
We both added the lettuce and some other ingredients. She was excited to try it at lunch.
I felt it was necessary to proceed one step at a time and let her touch, smell, measure and choose. It was fun for her and she enjoyed the result. We both did! -
It was so nice having a zoom call all together! I enjoyed getting to know everyone and hearing about how the course is going. It was an added benefit getting some zoom practice for sure.
We all had questions on how to instruct ” eg. word tennis – until you can’t think of any more”. I over planned, but in the end I’m glad I had a lot of material to go over with the group. -
Indeed, the meeting last Sunday seemed to be a big success. I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to join you! Thank you for all of your feedback.
I tried doing the error correction with my daughter today. Sometimes just reading the sentence aloud, was enough for her to recognize the mistake eg He’s more tall than his brother (taller not more tall). Other times reading up to the error, then eliciting did the trick. Crossing my hands over was all she needed for, She’s teacher of English… She’s an English teacher.
After she found the correct answer orally, I made sure to write the correct sentence on the whiteboard and read it aloud with her.
It would have been better to do this activity with all of you or at least with some adult students. I agree when you say it depends on the error and it depends on the student. More students would have given me a bigger variety of situations. Once again, practicing seems to be the key.
I hope to join you next time! -
I did this teaching task with my 12 yr old daughter again. While she understands and speaks English, she hasn’t learned the grammar points yet.
I kept it very simple. I didn’t know how long I was going to be able to keep her attention and interest. She enjoyed the 2nd Conditional example sentence “If I saw a ghost, I’d scream.” That part was fun π
She was able to recognize the error when I CCQed by writing an incorrect sentence on the whiteboard. That was a confidence booster for both of us!
Overall, it was a success. -
I loved that you did this teaching task with your husband! He’s getting a lot out of the course too! π
I agree that having everything written down is a good idea. I’m going to do the same. Practicing with a “real” student seems very useful. I’m glad it went well for you! -
It looks like you found an agreeable way to complete the task too! I love it!! Could this be the start of something?? π
-
I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one overthinking!! It’s definitely a skill keeping things simple. I appreciated your encouragement and the wisdom of taking things one step at a time Alex. I look forward to another zoom call soon π
